DIVERSE 2007 conference: Lillehammer, Norway
Developing Innovative Video Resources for Students Everywhere
The DIVERSE Conference was held in June, 2007 and was hosted by Lillehammer University College and the DIVERSE organization.
Mobile technology resources from The Ashcombe School
The main goal for the conference was to enhance the use of video in teaching and learning. To achieve this, the organising committee invited those who produce, use or want to use video in their daily work, or do research within this area. The conference framework consisted of a combination of internationally known keynote speakers, plenary sessions and parallel sessions of contibutors' presentations There was also an interesting social program with new experiences for visitors to Norway. The main theme was video as a technology and method for supporting human communication over distances in time and space.
The Ashcombe School's webmaster, David Seume, presented a paper on one of his current projects; the development of interactive learning resources using the Video iPod as a moblie learning platform. This work involves, among other things, the adaptation of existing Modern Language resources from the school's website.
As one of the themes the organisers wanted to address involved the use of mobile devices, David's presentation was well received. He was also invited talk about his work as a guest on a magazine programme broadcast live each day on Norwegian TV and also streamed live on the Internet.

Although by no means polished, the outcome of this first foray is a working quiz supported by video and audio files. The current version enables the user to read some instructions, watch the video then answer a few simple questions based upon what has been heard. It also offers the opportunity to replay the soundtrack while reading and answering the questions, and the facility to read the script.
The completed project contains four related exercises each with nine sets of questions plus a transcript in French and English.
Attention next turned to developing a web application for the iPhone. Read more...
